He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Tunis Evelyn Alley and Walter Frank Oakes; his children, Deborah Ann Burford, Stephen Preston Oakes and David Eugene Oakes; his siblings, Buddy Oakes, Naomi Oakes and Patsy Oakes Higley; his son-in-law Jim Burford; his wife Garnet Louise Ward Oakes; his siblings, Fred Oakes of Statesville, NC, Martha Hord (Colorado), Barbara VanZant (West Virginia) and Rosalie Skeens of Statesville, NC; his daughter Debbie; and his grandchildren, Michael (Sarah Burford), Matthew Oakes, Ryan (Brady Oakes) and Morgan (Spencer Guy). He was also cherished by three great-grand daughters.
