He was predeceased by: his sister Norma Williamson; and his brother-in-law Earl Williamson. He is survived by: his wife Etta Davis Knox; his grandchildren, Carrie Becker, Chris Becker, Jessica Metcalf (Brent), Ashley Sluder (Josh) and Megan Clark (Greg); his friend Carl Chandler (Jan); and also, Janet Becker (Barry) and Betty Yoshida (Chokay).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John's honor to Carolinas Palliative Care and Hospice Network or Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund.
