He was predeceased by: his parents, Vergil Whitley and Mary York Whitley; his brother James Whitley (Sherrill); his wife Barbara Whitley (Simpson); and his brother-in-law Roy Hamilton.

He is survived by: his children, Vangie Whitley (Cindy) of Charlotte and Patrick Whitley (Patty); his grandchildren, Kelly Whitley Miller (Andrew), Paige Schwarz and Kyle Whitley; his great grandchild Norah Anne Miller; and his siblings, Brenda Hamilton of Monroe, Jane Baucom (Donnie) of Monroe, Lane Whitley (Debbie) of Monroe and Eddie Whitley (Sandra) of Monroe. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
