He is survived by: his wife Elaine Hahn Abernathy; his children, Chris Abernathy of Morganton, Shannon Abernathy Drake of Morganton and Patrick Abernathy (Emily) of Asheville; his grandchildren, Lily Drake, Morgan Drake, Chloe Abernathy and Ryan Abernathy; his sister Jane Abernathy; and his nieces and nephews, Susan Arenschield, Paige Arenschield (Sunny), Stefanie Burris, Richard Arenschield and Stephen Burris.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care or Calvary Lutheran Church.
