He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse Mitchell and Hessie Mitchell; his wife Betty Lou Mitchell; his son David S. Mitchell; and his brother Harold Mitchell.
He is survived by: his son James C. Mitchell, Jr. (Rebecca); his grandchildren, Jenny Mitchell Vestal (Lee) and James C. Mitchell, III (Ashley); his great grandchildren, Spencer, Grace, Grayson, Alayna and Aubrey; his brother Rev. J. C. Mitchell; and his close friends, Millie Wallis, Liz and Johnny Beach. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Morganton.
