He was predeceased by: his former wives, Elfriede Monki Kaegi Kerns and Sue Kerns. He is survived by: his significant other Cheryle Oswandel Rich; his children, David Kerns of Baxter Springs, KS and Monika Stephens of Seneca, SC; his grandchildren, Alicia, Emma Lou Stephens, Michael Kerns and Levi Heady; his great grandchild Anthony Kerns; and his sister Ruth Ann Boardman.
