He was predeceased by: his parents, William Downing and Evelyn Carpenter Downing; and his siblings, Peggy Ann Prather and Kenneth William Downing. He is survived by: his wife Roberta Ann Downing; his daughters, Debbie Downing of Tollesboro and Melissa Ann Downing; his granddaughters, Sheena Denham (Joe) of Maysville, Kentucky and Nicole Logan (Justin) of Maysville, Kentucky; and his great grandchildren, Layla, Josie Denham, Zach, Brook, Adam, Karriann and Gage Logan.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made in honor of Donald Downing to Truett Baptist Association Children's Home, 2235 NC Hwy 141, Marble, NC 28905.
