He was predeceased by: his wife Mary Etta Smith; his parents, George James Smith, Sr. and Mary Alice Skinner Smith; and his siblings, Mable, Elsie, Mary Helen, Willie, Dee and Ray.
He is survived by: his children, Karen Smith Lee (Steve) of Greenville, SC and Ed Smith, Jr. (Robin) of Newport; his grandchildren, Paige Rostin (Mike), Joseph McCown (Elizabeth), Edward Thomas Smith III (Trey), Madison Smith and Katie Hylton; his great grandchildren, Saunders Rostin, McCrae Rostin, Ella Duncan and Palmer Duncan; his siblings, Thelma Barrow of Kinston, Maezell Cauley (David) of New Bern, George Smith, Jr. (Martha) of Kinston and Johnny Smith (Maxine) of Kinston; and his pet Nellie.
