He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred Pinkney and Elsie Mae Carpenter; his wife Julia Ann Carpenter; his grandson Garon Wayne Benson; and his siblings, Haywood Carpenter and Verlene Parker.

He is survived by: his son David Robert Carpenter, Jr. (Mandy); and his brothers, Alfred Carpenter, Johnny Carpenter and James Carpenter.
