He was predeceased by: his parents, Larry Monroe Coats and Linda Thornton Brown; his sister Cindy Ann Coats; and his stepsiblings, Brenda Warren and Earnest Tart.

He is survived by: his siblings, Carol Naylor (Huey), Patty Jackson (Billy) and James Coats (Michelle); his stepmother Dorothy Coats; his stepsiblings, Joseph Tart, Rusty Brown, Eddie Arnold Brown, Veronica Gregory and Empy Fowler; his close friends, Sheila and Wanda; Arnold Roy Brown. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
