He was predeceased by: his parents, James A., Sr. and Mildred Whitman Surles; his son Michael Surles; his brother Jack Surles; and his stepparents, Paul Mack and Ethel Howie.

He is survived by: his wife Gail Surles; his son Patrick Surles (Vesta); his granddaughters, Keenan Surles, Kayla Surles and Emma Surles; and his brothers, Jerry Surles and Carl Mack.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dementia Alliance of NC, 9131 Anson Way, Ste. 206, Raleigh, NC 27615.
