He is survived by: his parents, Lucy Sullivan Dawson and Fred Dawson; his wife Grace Small Dawson; his daughter Darlene D. Bass (Charles) of Tarboro; his grandchildren, Scott Radosevich and Brent Radosevich; and his siblings, Herbert R. Dawson of Elizabeth City, Thomas W. Dawson of Elizabeth City, Joshua Dawson of Tarboro, Melba D. Martin of Wilson, Kay Lockey of Murfreesboro and Grace D. Waters of Rocky Mount. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
