He was predeceased by: his parents, Willard Martin Akes and Myra Bohnenkamp Akes; his significant other Barbara Jean Newton Akes; and his wife Mildred Akes. He is survived by: his children, Marty Akes (Annette) of Thomasville and Holly Akes Bowman (Travis) of Winston-Salem; his grandchildren, Jacob Akes, Madison Akes, Riley Bowman and Dylan Bowman; and his family John. He is also survived by many friends and neighbors.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 29th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the J. C. Green & Sons Chapel (122 W Main St, Thomasville, NC 27360). A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 29th 2026 at 1:00 PM at the same location. An entombment will be held on Friday, May 29th 2026 at the Guilford Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Davidson County Veterans Honor Guard.
