He was predeceased by: his parents, Doretta Frenna Smith and William Jesse Smith; and his brother Patrick Smith. He is survived by: his wife Brenda K. Smith; his daughters, Allison Benitez (Juan) of Raleigh, NC and Susan Byrd (Jeff) of St. Louis; his stepdaughters, Sandy Williamson of Wake Forest, NC, Jenny Bailey (John) of Stovall, NC and Kimberly Lewis (Jay) of Cary, NC; his grandchildren, Ian, Lillian, Logan, Bentley, Will, Bryson, Parker, Seth, Katie and Isaac; and his siblings, Frank Smith of Lexington, KY, Anna Grover, Rosemary Smith of Lillington, NC, Eddie Smith of Fuquay-Varina, NC, John Smith of New Bern, NC and Michael Smith of Charlotte, NC..
