It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Maude Burgess Shatley of West Jefferson, North Carolina, who passed away on March 30, 2025, at the age of 94, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her parents, George Oscar and Golda Miller Burgess; her husband Billy Joe Shatley; her stepmother Millie Lee Bare Burgess; her siblings, Robert Dean Burgess, George Albert Burgess, Shirley Burgess Roten, Hazel Burgess Barbour and Rose Burgess Cook; and her nephews, Mike Burgess and Dan Cook.
She is survived by: her brother Wayne Burgess (Becky) of West Jefferson; her sister-in-law Jean Turner Reeves; her sibling's children, Tommy Barbour, Rob Burgess, Amy Burgess Little, Sandy Maccioli, Sherri DiLorenzo, Allison Hodges, Jan Deckert, Jackie Badger, Jerry Burgess and Eric Burgess; and her caregivers, Terri Greer, Lisa Greene, Linda Dolinger, Pam Calhoun and Nancy Watson.
In 2020 she received The Order of The Long Leaf Pine in recognition of her contributions to her state and her community, the highest service award the state gives.
