He was predeceased by: his parents, Montgomery Mathis and Rebecca Johnson Mathis; his wife Ruth Lorraine Shumate Mathis; his son Troy Lynn Mathis; and his siblings, Archie Mathis, Hugh Mathis, Devon Mathis, Rogan Mathis, Gaither Mathis, Willa Johnson, Arcille Mathis and Judy Hendren.
He is survived by: his brother Billy Mathis (Maggie) of North Wilkesboro. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
