He was predeceased by: his parents, James Sanford Bates, Sr. and Cassie Goodman Bates; and his siblings, Phyllis Hamby, Peggy Keaton, Alden Bates and Charlie Bates.
He is survived by: his wife Carol Jane Haga Bates; his sons, Jim Bates, III of Winston Salem and Michael Bates (April) of High Point; and his grandchildren, Lily Bates, Luke Bates and Jack Bates.
