He is survived by : his wife Barbara Gay Kuper of Richmond, Virginia.; his children, Jeffrey Clyde Payne, Lynn Payne Durham (John) and John Tipton Payne; his grandson Micajah James Durham; his foster brother Richard Tinsley (Elaine); and his half-brothers, Gary Matney, Bill Matney and Mike Matney.
