He is survived by: his mother Kristen Maples; his stepfather Mike Maples; his father Mark Johnson; his stepbrother Austin Maples; his half-sisters, Alexis Zastoupil and Emily Zastoupil; his stepsisters, Caitlin Maples and Sierra Maples; his grandparents, Carol Schneider (Tom), Leroy Gross (Nancy), Virgil Johnson and Mary Johnson; his aunts and uncles, Cynthia Landenberger, Colleen Johnson, Corey Gross (Amanda), John Johnson and Dan Johnson; his cousins, Matthew Johnson, Virgil Johnson, Lisa Whiteing (Richard), Sarah Vaughan (Nick), James Whiting, Zoe Whiting, Tanner Fulliam, Tyanna Fulliam, David Johnson (Brenna), Liam, Dane, Soren, Sophie and Maggie Miller (Ryan); and his godfather Larry Klemer.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials in Nick's name to the Dakota Zoo.
