He is survived by : his mother Royce Potts (Walters) of Grant; his wife Darlene Lee; his children, Jared, Jennifer, Chad and Leah; his grandchildren, Chad Miller (Stephanie) of St. Paul, Leah Wescoat (Charley) of North Platte, Jared Potts (Melissa) of Grant, Jennifer Tatum (Joe) of Grant, Josey, Eli, Kenna, Gabriel, Rally, Riggin, Ryeker, Charlotte, Willa, Cecelia, Conner, Jaiven and Brock; his siblings, Genie Bishop (Gaylord) of Grant and Deb Tatum (Rick) of Grant; and his sister-in-law Karen Potts of Grant. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A memorial has been established in John's memory for later designation.
