He was predeceased by: his son Chris Colgate; his siblings, Richard Colwell and Susan Tritsch; and his stepdaughter Marcia Macdonald. He is survived by: his wife Lydia Colwell (Irvine); his children, John Colwell and Mary Koon; his son-in-law Jim Koon; his grandchildren, Ross Koon, Stuart Koon, Hope Koon, Henry Koon, Emily Colwell and Katherine Colwell; his great grandchildren, Orion Koon and Eula Koon; his stepchildren, Laura Gunning, Sarah Ramsay and Andrew Macdonald; his former wife Barbara Hrosenchick; and also, Colwell Colgate, Howie and Lydia Irvine Macdonald. He is also survived by son and daughter-in-law.
