He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Gerald J. Metzheiser and Claire Metzheiser (Quigley); his wife Anne T. Cahill; his sons, Edward (Linda), Paul (Sue), David (Beth) and Neil (Nicole); his grandchildren, Paige, Jack, Phillip, Luke, Henry, Cole, Jacob, John and Max; his stepgrandson Matthew LeClair; his sister Rosemarie McDonagh (William); and his sister-in-law Margaret Cahill. He was also cherished by niece, five nephews, several cousins.
