He was predeceased by : his parents, Emil Valdes and Helen Valdes (Keane); and his brother John Valdes. He is survived by : his wife Anna Aschkenes; his stepdaughter Deborah Aschkenes of Tuckahoe, NY; his sisters, Marie Valdes and Teresa Valdes-Hebrank (John) of Poughkeepsie; and his nieces and nephews, Beth Hebrank (Nancy) of Poughkeepsie, NY, Jessica Hebrank (Julie) of Norwalk, CT, Benjamin Balin (Gabi) of Charleston, SC and Jack Bailin (Stephanie) of Philadelphia, PA..

“When searching online for my old friend Marie Valdes to wish her a Happy Birthday, I leaned of the passing of her brother Joe this past January. Unexpected sad news. Many years ago while in med school when Marie and I were dating, her family (Dad Emil, Mom Helen aka Eileen, brothers Joe and John) welcomed me into their home where they made me feel welcome. A warm family environment. I remember Joe as a quiet intellectual who loved to play his clarinet”
