He was predeceased by: his parents, Jovino Mendez and Marcela Perez; and his siblings, Carmen and Arcides Mendez. He is survived by: his significant other Alejandrina Rosa; his son Benjamin Mendez Jr. (JoAnna); his stepdaughters, Carmen, Milligro, Christie, Alexandria and Veronica; his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Benjamin; his stepgrandchildren, Jose, Abby, Gilbert, Cathy, A. J., Damien, Lizzie, Andre, Julian and Elena; his siblings, Estelle Mendez, Domingo Mendez, Elba Lugo and George Mendez; and his former wife Rosa Mendez.
