He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard Sawyer, Sr. and Alma Spruill; and his sisters, Richetta Blount and Eugenia Bradley. He is survived by: his wife Philomena Sawyer; his children, Gwendolyn Dawley, Denice Sawyer, Fran Eddis (Bill) and JD Lewis (Tye); and his aunt Marilyn Carrington. He is also survived by many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
