He was predeceased by: his parents, Milford Bates and Edith Bates; his wife Jean F. Bates; his son-in-law Jerry Crowe; and his sister-in-law Jane Williams.
He is survived by: his children, Michael Bates (Kylee) of Pulteney and Brenda Crowe of Bath; his grandchildren, Taylor Crowe, Jordan Crowe (Brooke) and Alexander Bates; his great grandchildren, Remi and Mizah Bates; his siblings, Norman Bates of Branchport, Audrey Sherwood of Bath and Brenda Powell (Bob) of Corning; and his siblings' children, Ted Williams and Kathe Smothers.
