He was predeceased by : his parents, Theodore Julius Nielsen and Lillian Nielsen (Brunges); and his brother Theodore Nielsen (Skip). He is survived by : his wife Karen L. Nielsen; his children, Robert T. Nielsen (Susan Arditi), Donna L. Nielsen Brooks, Gail L. Puff (Richard) and Eric J. Nielsen (Maria); his grandchildren, Judith Mae Nielsen, AJ, Kevin Brooks, Richard Jr. (Alyssa), Christopher (Kasey), Brandon (Samantha), Justin Puff and Isabella Nielsen; his sisters, Patricia Hultberg (Randy) of Newport News, VA and Wendy Regan (Mike) of Springfield, MA; and his friends, John, Kathy Hoefer, Sal and Marie D'Amico. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren.
