He was predeceased by: his parents, James A. Richards and Elizabeth McMullen Richards; and his brother David Richards. He is survived by: his wife Sharon A. Muench Richards; his sons, Todd Richards (Julie) of Columbus, OH and Bradly Richards (Carrie) of Pittsburgh, PA; his grandchildren, Samuel, Noah, Emma and Madison Richards; his sister Marilyn Cost (John) of Pittsburgh; his great-aunt Jane; and his siblings-in-law, Michael Muench (Linda) of Pittsburgh and Nancy Richards.
