He was predeceased by : his parents, John Tierney and Elizabeth Jurkovic Tierney; and his brothers, Michael and John. He is survived by : his wife Verlene Wilcox Sanford Tierney; his stepchildren, Katherine Tierney of Johnstown, Lorraine Runkle (Tim) of Gloversville, Stephanie McNutt of Gloversville, Thomas Sanford of Broadalbin, Kimberly Sikora (Bill) of Broadalbin, Brian D. Sanford of Broadalbin, Susan Dygon (Mike) of Broadalbin, Robert Sanford of Schenectady and Michael "Toby" Sanford of Rensselaer; the mother of his children Lauretta Tierney of Mayfield; and his sister-in-law Carolyn Tierney of Gloversville. He is also survived by twenty five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the NYOH Community Cancer Foundation, in care of the funeral home.
