He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Martin Burns and Verna Burns (DeVereaux); his wife Kathleen Burns (Rohde); his children, Timothy Burns, Kevin Burns (Ruth Elise) and Kelly Tyler (David); his grandchildren, Deanna Burns, Alec Burns, Steven Burns and Brooklyn Tyler; and his siblings, Vincent Burns (Ruth), Ruth Prendergast (late Michael), Rose Yates, Harold Burns, Carol Anderson (Peter), Janet DeChambeau (late Ronald), Paul Burns, Mary Jane Stolzenberg (Edwin) and Elizabeth Coomey (William). He was also cherished by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
