She was predeceased by: her husband Donald F. Virkler; her brother Henry O. Schaab; and her parents, Henry Schaab and Dorothy Fenton Schaab. She is survived by: her children, Alisa Grinnals (Michael Grinnals) of Syracuse, NY and Eric Virkler (Heidi VanZandt) of Lowville; her grandsons, Scott and Jon; and her caregiver Rose Marie. She is also survived by spouses and three great grandsons.

“Alisa and Eric, I first met your mother when I was student teaching at Lowville Academy about 1958. She was just a few years older than I was. I remember being very impressed with her abilities at the piano and organ. Later, when I was teaching music at Beaver River Central School, my adult chorus was performing Handel's "Messiah". I invited Sylvia to be our organist, which she graciously agreed to do. She was fantastic, the best anywhere around this area. And she was a lovely lady.”
