He was predeceased by: his parents, Palmer Nilsen and Birgit Nilsen. He is survived by: his wife Vivian D. Nelsen of Oneonta, NY; his children, Ruth Carlsen (Steven) of Succasunna, NJ, John Nelsen (Jenn Smith) of Hummelstown, PA and Susan Edmonds (Jeff) of Oneonta, NY; his grandchildren, Jonathan Nelsen (Desiree Fernandez), Jack Edmonds, Luke Edmonds, Chyanne Wellman and Kaitlyn Wellman; his great grandchild Wesley Nelsen; and his sister Edith Igland. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
