He was loved and cherished by many people including: his sons, John Jr. (James) of Washington, DC and James' (Julie); his granddaughter Sarah of Charleston, SC; his parents, Joseph Somers and Dorothy Dando Somers; and his wife Jo-Ann Marie Donato. He was also cherished by three cousins, a niece, and two nephews.

He participated in dozens of charity rides and events over the years on his Harley Davidson.
