He was predeceased by: his parents, Anthony Bates and Wanda Smith Bates; and his siblings, Thomas, Nathaniel, Paul Bates and Audrey Hopkins.
He is survived by: his children, Tina Thomas of Otto, Rodney Bates (Julie Johnson) of Cattaraugus and Dylan Bates of Salamanca; his grandchildren, Jena Dodge (Luke), Tyler Sanders (Shannon), Derrek Bates, Dakota Bates and Zachery Bates (Fiona); his great grandchildren, Emma, Caleb Dodge, Braiden, Gracelyn Sanders and Fiona Bates; and his siblings, Stella Coleman (Dave) of Summerville, S. C., Larry Bates (Nancy) of Massillon, Dorothy Palmer (Thomas) of Massillon, Suzanne Smith of Randolph, Jonathon Bates (Marge) of Brant and David Bates (Linda) of Randolph. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
