He was predeceased by: his parents, John Peter and Bernice Valen (Gogis); and his siblings, Ralph Valen and Carolyn Campbell. He is survived by: his wife Mary Ann Shaw; his children, Karen Vanwolde (Kyle) of Loch Sheldrake, Steven Valen of Hyde Park and William Valen of Van Cleave, MI; and his grandchildren, Gianna Valen, Isabella, Gavin, Aubree and Kaleb Vanwolde.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Denis Church, US Paralyzed Veterans, Wounded Warriors Project or the Knights of Columbus.
