He was predeceased by: his parents, Wilhem August Holzhauer and Katherina Schmer Holzhauer; his wife Ingeborg Hintz Holzhauer; and his close friend Christa Kohler. He is survived by: his children, Ralph Holzhauer (Laura) of Saugerties, Debra Sickler (Ronald) of Louisburg, KS, Karin Williams (Michael McCagg) of Redhook and Joann Shultis (Bill Barhite) of Clinton Corners; his niece Linda Bognar of Kingston; his sisters, Frieda Sellman and Hannelore Flocke; and his grandchildren, Kimberly Huls, Christopher Sickler, Amy Siebert, Heather Porter, Stacy Williams-Facompre, Brian Holzhauer, Jennifer Shultis and Justin Beatty. He is also survived by fifteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
