He was predeceased by : his parents, Harold Smith and Virginia Vandermark Smith. He is survived by : his close friend Julie Tilly; his sons, Douglas E. Smith (Michele) of Nashville, TN, Craig H. Smith (Cheyenne) of Murphy, NC and Darin E. Smith (Elizabeth) of Montgomery; his stepdaughters, Jessica Nicholson (James) of Walden, Katie Marse of Walden and Ashley Tilly of Walden; and his aunt Nancy Vetter. He is also survived by several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in Douglas's memory to the Walden Fire Department.
