He was predeceased by : his mother Zula Meadows; his stepfather Leroy Meadows; his sister Deborah Moore; and his brothers-in-law, Ed Clyce and Ed Miller.

He is survived by : his wife Alta Faye Mercer; his children, Carl Mercer (Tammy), Kevin Mercer (Carol), Patsy Cooper (Charles) and Rhonda McCown (Kevin); and his siblings, Barb Clyce, Vicky Miller, Marilyn Brock, Wanda Blankenbecker (Steve), Steve Meadows (Judy) and Leroy Skip Meadows (Marjorie). He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren.
