Hairston; his sons, Michael Hairston Jr. and David Busby; his stepdaughters, Naomi Lewis and Anna Hoegner; his siblings, Lisa M. Hairston and Keith Hairston; his aunt Barbara J. Hairston-Lewis; his uncle Benny K. Hairston; and his cousin Deborah Hammond. He is also survived by his four grandchildren.
