He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Kirkland and Helen Kirkland (Hart); and his brother Ernest Kirkland. He is survived by: his wife Vicki Bortmas; his children, Robert Kirkland (Lisa), Lori Blazer and Stacy Piersant (Don); and his siblings, Shirley Maise (Ron), Ed Kirkland (Carolyn) and Dennis Kirkland (Deborah). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Cortland United Methodist Church.
