He was predeceased by: his parents, Crisoforo Barrera and Elodia Barrera (Vela); his wife Anna Mae McCoy; his son Chris Barrera; and his siblings, Norbert Barrera, Bertha Lopez, Alberta Barrera, Delia Hernandez and Ameila Campbell.
He is survived by: his friend Curtis "Frog" Malone; his nephew Willy McCoy; his daughters, Linda Arguelles (Joe) of Gibsonburg and Amy Robertson of Gibsonburg; and his grandchildren, Jesse Robertson of Columbus, Anna Turner (Alex) of Fostoria, Joe, Jr. Arguelles (Bonita) of Fremont, Rachel Mazza (Mike), Brandon Bayless, Crystal Barrera of Fremont and Travis Rainey of Columbus. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
