He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Frederick W. Mathews and Florence Mathews (Buckley); his children, Robin Potrzebowski (TJ), Penny Mathews Washburn (Steve), Paula Ward (Kenneth), Frederick Mathews, Jr., Danny (Maddy) and Randy Mathews (Netta); his brother Roger Mathews (Debbie); his stepsister Gladys Mathews; his wife Norma J. Mathews; and his daughter Brenda Shiflett. He was also cherished by several great-grandchildren.
