He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Green and Della Tunnell (Hankins); his grandsons, Joshua Tunnell and David Lee Adkins Jr.; and his siblings, Bill Tunnell, Nellie Green Tunnell and Gertrude Tunnell.
He is survived by: his wife Esther Tunnell; his children, Patty Adkins (David), Barbara Nadler (Tom) and William Tunnell (Corinne); and his grandchildren, Mark Adkins, Michelle Fredrick, Sarah Ross and Shane Adkins. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
