He was predeceased by : his sons, Mike Shope and Joe Shope; his grandson Mike Shope; and his siblings, Wilbur Shope, Russel Shope, Norman Shope, Mickey Gabbard and Sue Shope.

He is survived by : his wife Betty Ruth Shope; his children, Phillip Shope, Linda Calvert and Kaye Shope Johnson; his children-in-law, Paula Shope, Darrel Johnson and Charles Calvert; his grandchildren, Blake Shope, Keri Shope, Troy Calvert, Gerri Jones, Shawn Shope, Vanessa Shope, Pete Brudine, Cheri Calvert and Skyler Shope Johnson; and his sibling Glen Shope.
