He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Fields and Maude Fields; his siblings, Robert Fields, Clarence Fields, Willie George, Joseph Fields, Hugh "Buddy" Fields, Allie, Queen Esther, Edith King and Dessie Fields; and his son Mark Upshaw.
He is survived by: his close friend Carolyn Upshaw; his sons, Donald Upshaw of Ravenna and Sylvester Upshaw of Akron; his grandchildren, Cynthea Upshaw-Jones (Monty) of Kent, Ashley Boykin, Sylvester Upshaw Jr. (Jeanise), Donnell Upshaw and Xavier Upshaw (Ashanti); his great grandchildren, Quentin, Ayden, Dalaina, Carter, Korey, Tylur and Xavier; his brother Babe Fields (Joanne); and his nieces, Janet Bailey and Betty Brown.
