He was predeceased by: his mother Betty Louise Smith (Balazs). He is survived by: his father Robert Eugene; his wife Kathy Smith (Mallion); his son Travis Mallion; his grandson Tripp Mallion; and his pets, Bella and Gizmo. He is also survived by several cousins and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pelotonia 2021 (Pelotonia.org/give), a fundraiser for cancer research held each year in August at OSU.
