He was predeceased by: his parents, Austin Carlson and Catherine Carlson (Brecht); his son Joshua McMullen; his brothers, Duane, Howard and David; his aunt Lucille Brecht; and his niece Lorna Kunkel Hall.

He is survived by: his wife Ann Marie Jones (Annie); his children, Maggie Burks, Jesse Carlson (Leah Robinson) and Kristen Lennex (Keith); his grandchildren, Isaak, Charley, Ruthie and Lucy; his siblings, Claire A. Carlson (Mary) and Ann Bjerk (Orlo); and his pet Elsa. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
