He was predeceased by : his parents, Roy Lee and Thelma L. Williams Virden; and his brothers, Victor and Roger. He is survived by : his wife Ellen Christoff Virden; his children, Gary R. Virden, Jr. (Christine) of Steubenville, Carrie Lynn Rector (Guy) of Zanesville, Brian Hagerty of Empire, Mary Ann Rieger (Seth) of Strasburg and Lori Meyer (David) of Fairmont, WV; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael, Jeremy, Emily, Katie and Allison; and his sister Jean Forsythe of Wellsburg.
