He was predeceased by : his parents, Robert James and Lois James; his former life partner Gladys James; and his brothers, Robert James III and Terry James.

He is survived by : his wife Thelma James; his sons, Shawn James, Darrell James Jr. and Omar James; his stepdaughter Disha Phillips; his daughters-in-law, Lucero James and Saba James; and his siblings, Danny James, Freddy James, Steven James, Margaret James, Brenda James and Renae James.
