He was predeceased by: his parents, Lacy Backward of Salina and Ada England of Stillwell, Oklahoma.; and his siblings, Charles McClain, Jerry Backward, Les Dino Backward, Phyllis Downing, Katherine McClain and Shirley Cox.

He is survived by: his children, Daniel Mahee of Tulsa, Dexter Backward of Cushing and Adrian Serrano of Tulsa; his sister Kelly Chancellor of Salina; and his former wife Donna Jacobs. He is also survived by five grandsons; one great-grandson; and two nieces.
